Search for photospheric footpoints of quiet Sun transition region loops

چکیده

Context. The footpoints of quiet Sun Transition Region (TR) loops do not seem to coincide with the photospheric magnetic structures appearing in traditional low-sensitivity magnetograms. Aims. To look for the so-far unidentified photospheric footpoints of TR loops using G-band bright points (BPs) as proxies for photospheric magnetic field concentrations. Methods. Comparison of TR measurements with SoHO/SUMER and photospheric magnetic field observations obtained with the Dutch Open Telescope. Results. Photospheric BPs are associated with bright TR structures, but they seem to avoid the brightest parts of the structure. BPs appear in regions that are globally redshifted, but they avoid extreme velocities. TR explosive events are not clearly associated with BPs. Conclusions. The observations are not inconsistent with the BPs being footpoints of TR loops, although we have not succeeded to uniquely identify particular BPs with specific TR loops.

Emergence of Small-scale Magnetic Loops through the Quiet Solar Atmosphere

We investigate the emergence of magnetic flux in the quiet Sun at very small spatial scales, focusing on the magnetic connection between the photosphere and chromosphere. The observational data consist of spectropolarimetric measurements and filtergrams taken with the Hinode satellite and the Dutch Open Telescope. We find that a significant fraction of the magnetic flux present in internetwork ...

Coronal Loop Oscillations Observed with the T Ransit Ion Region and Coronal Expl Orer

We report here, for the Ðrst time, on spatial oscillations of coronal loops, which were detected in extreme-ultraviolet wavelengths (171 with the T ransition Region and Coronal Explorer, in the temAŽ ) perature range of MK. The observed loop oscillations occurred during a Ñare that began at T e B 1.0È1.5 1998 July 14, 12 :55 UT and are most prominent during the Ðrst 20 minutes. The oscillating ...

Similarities and differences between coronal holes and the quiet Sun : are loop statistics the key ?

Coronal holes (CH) emit significantly less at coronal temperatures than quiet Sun regions (QS), but can hardly be distinguished in most chromospheric and lower transition region lines. A key quantity for the understanding of this phenomenon is the magnetic field. We use data from SOHO/MDI to reconstruct the magnetic field in coronal holes and the quiet Sun with the help of a potential magnetic ...

Local Correlation Tracking and the Magnetic Induction Equation

Recently, local correlation tracking has been applied to magnetograms for determining photospheric velocities. This letter demonstrates that local correlation tracking is inconsistent with the magnetic induction equation which governs the temporal evolution of the photospheric magnetograms. A modified formulation, consistent with the magnetic induction equation, is presented for accurately foll...

Coronal Heating by Magnetic Kink Waves

We show that the magnetic kink waves generated by the motions of the photospheric footpoints of the coronal ux tubes can supply adequate energy for heating the quiet corona. We model the solar corona as two-layer isothermal atmosphere, with the lower layer having chromospheric thickness and the temperature and the upper layer having coronal temperature.
